Leif Ingebrigtsen

Leif has been doing improv (in Winnipeg) since 2000, but has been performing his whole life. He has played a wide variety of musical instruments, including piano, keyboards, guitar and drums for as long as he can remember. After high school, Leif performed with the sketch-comedy/improv troupe Your Original Parents (YOP). Leif joined Outside Joke in 2007 and was finally able to combine his love of music and improv and later would become quite fond of referring to himself in third person. He joined RFT in the summer of 2014 for OFFBOOK The Musical and just never left Edmonton.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH RAPID FIRE?

I was invited to workshop and perform with Off Book: The Improvised Musical for the Edmonton Fringe so I dropped my life in Winnipeg and never looked back.

WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO SCORING A SUCCESSFUL IMPROV SCENE?

Commitment to play. Even a scene that’s falling apart can be fun and entertaining if everyone involved commits to the fun and game they are playing.

HOW IMPORTANT IS MUSIC TO AN IMPROV SCENE?

Music should primarily go unnoticed in improv aside from musicals or montages. It’s basic purpose is to heighten the emotion of the scene.

WHAT ARE SOME THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS THE HOUSE MUSICIAN?

Deep cut references during theatre sports, “This reminds me of that christmas episode of Stickin’ Around…” *whole teams turns and looks at musician expectingly.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SHORT FORM VS. LONG FORM AND VICE VERSA?

Short form is like a machine gun loaded with jokes, long form is more of an ancient samurai sword being slowly unsheathed using the mastered techniques of narrative and character development. Either way you’ll die…LAUGHING.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE IMPROV FORMATS/GAMES?

Coming from a long form background, I’m a huge sucker for a simple, beautiful fixed- narrative. The skill and technique it takes to pull off an hour long scene with no fancy edits or cuts still floors me. Also love me some scene painting.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR IMPROV STYLE?

Staring intently off at distant landscapes while slowly getting louder and louder.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT ON STAGE?

Being asked, in the middle of a scene, what I would say to my real father if he were there right at that moment…

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF RFT?

Party.

DESCRIBE WORKING FOR RAPID FIRE IN A SINGLE SENTENCE:

It’s not “work” it’s more of a dream. A day dream! But, like, a deep sub-conscious day dream. Lucid though! It’s like sleep walking…through a dream. Have you seen Inception? Man I hope Leo gets the Oscar this year.
